Advanced High Court search is accessed by selecting 'Search High Court' from the drop down menu to the right of the search bar, and then selecting the 'advanced' option to the right. A drop-down form will appear with all advanced search options available.

Users can then query High Court data using a range of filters. This includes queries for cases involving particular defendants or plaintiffs, particular legal representatives, case reference numbers, date ranges.

Queries can consist of multiple filters in conjunction.  The example below shows where the user has searched for cases involving a particular name as defendant, featuring a particular piece of text, like "chancery action," in a filing, listing or order.

Cases returned will feature both that name as defendant, and also that text of "chancery action" in their filings, listings and orders.  Search results will highlight where the text matched the query.

SOME SEARCH TIPS

Search shortcuts

Once familiar with the variety of search options available under Advanced Seach, you can start quickly performing those searches using search shortcuts.

For example, searching for a case where a name like AIB Mortgage Bank appears only as a plaintiff, can be written directly into the search box using the shortcut "p:" which is the search shortcut for plaintiff, as follows:

p:AIB Mortgage Bank

You will notice that after you perform any search, the search shortcuts which apply to your query are visible in the search box above the results of that search, so you can learn them as you go along.

Multiple search terms - "AND" searches - use a comma

Any combination of names can be entered - use a comma (as opposed to an ampersand or the word "and" to separate them).

To run an "AND' search on Courtsdesk Ireland you simply enter a comma between the words or phrases you would like to search for in conjunction.

For example to search for the multi-word phrase 'Bank of Ireland" and HSE you would separate the two searches with a comma:

bank of ireland, HSE

See here for an example of this search in judgments. Another example would be:

William Fry, John Smyth

See here for the results of that search of High Court cases mentioning both those names.

Exact and Extended Match

As standard, Courtsdesk employs non exact or 'extended' matching, which we continuously update, in order to help overcome spelling errors in the data (e.g. there are three cases in which the title and plaintiff's name is wrongly spelled "bnak" instead of "bank").

Using the box entitled "All of these phrases" will result in an extended or 'fuzzy' match, while using "All of these exact phrases" will results in exact matches only.

You will find that entering a "+" is the shortcut for doing an exact match search.
