If you already have the number of the High Court case you are looking for - sometimes referred to as the 'bill number' or the case number - you can find it quickly using the "ref:" search option.

This option can be used to search for a variety of case reference types - High Court, Court of Appeal or Supreme Court and set down numbers.

This search type is available in two ways:

1).  In advanced search options for High Court searches - use the "Case Reference" option

2). By using the the search short cut "ref:"  in the main search bar (note: there should be no space between the colon and the case number, e.g. ref:2018/123 P )

Case Reference Formats:

To use the "ref:"  search for High Court cases, the correct format must be used. For an Irish High Court case the format is as follows, year, slash, number, space, case-type letter(s). There is only one space which appears between the number and the letter or letters at the end denoting the case type (e.g. P for Plenary, COS for companies Acts) .

Sample High Court Case Reference:   2018/123 P

Partial matching

You can use the "ref:" search to find cases that partially match by not entering the case type letter, for example, searching for 2018/123 will find all cases with that number with the case type P, COS, R, etc.

What is included in the search?

The ref:  search looks within all case data in the courts.ie High Court search archive for the following types of case reference numbers:

  • Bill No.: e.g. 2017/1234 P

  • Set down number

  • Supreme Court reference

  • Appeal Court reference

  • Any numbers mentioned in filings (typically set down numbers)

[Please note - there is no search of the Court of Appeal of the Supreme Court per se -this search is for existing High Court cases which have had a Court of Appeal or Supreme Court case reference number applied to them.]
